Blyth Repository of History The Blyth Repository of History was initiated in 1994 by Brock & Janis Vodden. We have many GB of information on three computers.

The collection includes information on over 1,200 surnames, as well as family trees, along with info about business, schools, churches and service organizations. The Repository includes hundreds of binders filled with articles, noted, facts about Blyth area people,families, buildings, events, churches, businesses,schools, news clippings, thousands of obituaries and much more. Many pictures of peop

le, buildings, events, streetscapes from various eras, family portraits. The collection includes thousands of reference cards which refer to various resources and link particular resources to others. We get many requests from both local and distant persons seeking information about Blyth and area ancestors and answers to other historical questions. Most of the time we are able to comply with more information than was requested.

Cheese factory in Blyth at end of Dinsley Street began operating in old planing mill on July 1, 1945. Fire destroyed the original building November 4, 1952 and new building opened May 1953. Business was sold a few years after that and building was closed.

J.S. (Stan) Chellew took over the family business in 1913 after the sudden death of his father. He retired in 1947 selling the furniture and funeral business to James Lockwood of Clinton. Stan passed away in 1974 and is buried in Blyth Union Cemetery alongside his wife Elsie.

J. H. Chellew a cabinet maker came to Blyth in 1889. His business grew to include the sale of sewing machines, and musical instruments. In 1900 he added undertaking to the business. John was very active in Blyth as a member of numberous organizations as well as serving on council. He passed away suddenly in 1913 at the age of 59 and is buried in Blyth Union Cemetery with his wife Caroline.

In 2027 Blyth will celebrate it's 150th birthday. A Village Portrait was published in 1977 to mark our 100th and a committee is currently putting together a new book telling our story for the last 50 years.
