Burton Avenue United Church

Burton Avenue United Church Burton Avenue United Church is a dynamic Christ-centred community of faith serving Barrie, Ontario and Allandale for over 150 years. Across the Generations....

History:
Burton Avenue congregation dates back to the 1870's. The original wooden Allandale Methodist Church was opened on Gowan Street in 1873. In September 1895, the Methodist Trustees bought the corner lot where the church now stands from Catherine and John Brunton for $200.00 and built the present brick sanctuary. In March 1896 they mortgaged the lot for $4,000.00 from Manufacurer's Life Insur

ance Company to finish paying for the new building. It took until January 1914 to pay down the mortgage at $100.00 per month. The buiding had space for worship upstairs, and for gathering for pot-luck and Sunday school in the basement. It was the Protestant heart of the neighbourhood. When the Methodists, the Congregationalists and some Presbyterians joined in 1925, Allandale Methodist became Burton Avenue United Church. Our building has suffered two major fires by lightening - in 1933 and 1966. The education wing was added in 1960 to meet the spiritual needs of the baby boom generation. The sanctuary was 100 years old in 1995. The congregation of Burton Avenue United Church undertook major renovations to the church buidling in 1995 in celebration of our 100th anniversary. These renovations valued at over $500,000, provide a fully accessible bulding from which to conduct our ministries. Burton Avenue Church has had strong leadership from 40 "ordered" ministers. Names like Carder, Purdon, Page and Oben are still remembered. Many Elders and Stewards and teachers and leaders and literally thousands of members have served and worhipped and witnessed to God in this place. The church has been oriented toward Christian family life, to couples singles and the widowed. It boasts a tradition of good choral and organ music. The recent expanded ministry has opened up new avenues of service and exciting new dimensions of spirituality. With a history dating back over a century Burton Avenue Church has been blessed by God and has been a blessing to the City; a quiet but pulsating place to worship, grow spiritually and serve.

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to remind everyone there is a Youth Inc. meeting tomorrow evening, February 08th at 6:30.

On February 22nd the youth will be attending church and immediately following the service there is a church luncheon for everyone which the youth will participate in and immediately following their meal they will help with the clean up and then they will be prepping meals for the church food pantry. Pick up time to be determined. IF your child needs a ride home afterwards just let me know and we can arrange that.

This event will be in lieu of the meeting that night. We will resume regular evening meetings March 08th.

March 30 Worship Cancellation
Unfortunately, due to the weather conditions yesterday and today as well as the anticipation of more freezing rain overnight, we have decided to cancel the worship service for Sun., Mar. 30.

Environment Canada is advising that we consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. We are not sure when that will be as they are still forecasting that freezing rain will continue throughout the night and likely not end until 9:00 a.m. Sunday when it will turn to rain. This leaves the potential for difficult travel in the morning. In addition, many in the central, north and northeast areas of Barrie have been without power since this afternoon and may be without power throughout the night. If you are receiving this email, you may want to think of others who might need a phone call to check on their wellbeing and to ensure they have this information.

We will post this on our page, Facebook private group and website. If you know of someone who might not be able to get this information electronically, please give them a quick phone call.

Blessings for safety and warmth for all who are most affected by this extreme weather. See you next Sunday!

Worship Cancellation - Unfortunately, due to the weather this afternoon and the anticipation of more snow overnight with the heaviest snow coming Sunday morning, we have decided to cancel the worship service for Sun., Feb. 16.

Environment Canada is advising that "Conditions will rapidly deteriorate Sunday morning as a more significant area of snow and blowing snow arrives. An additional 15 to 25 cm is likely. Travel will be hazardous and is not recommended, particularly on Sunday."

As a community, we are taking extra caution so that those who would have to get to the church an hour before worship to ensure all is ready, won't have to worry overnight about their possible travel. We are also doing our part to stay off the roads while road crews and snow plow operators do their work.

Also, the Church office is closed on Monday for the Family Day holiday.

Blessings for a safe weekend for all.

02/13/2025

Due to the inclement weather, the church office will be closed today (February 13, 2025). Phones and emails will not be answered until tomorrow (Friday).

Cancellation of Worship for Sun., Jan. 5, 2025
Unfortunately, due to the weather today and the anticipation of more snow and snow squalls overnight and into Sunday, we have decided to cancel the worship service for Sun., Jan. 5. The City of Barrie has declared "a significant weather event" and is advising residents to use extra caution as roads are taking longer than usual to be cleared for safe use. Environment Canada is advising against non-essential travel.

As a community, we are taking extra caution so that those who would have to get to the church an hour before worship to ensure all is ready, won't have to do so. We are also doing our part to stay off the roads while road crews and snow plow operators do their work. We know that many of you have still not had your streets plowed, so this will encourage you to not worry about what morning travel will bring.

We will celebrate the Epiphany next Sunday, Jan. 12, with our annual Star Words activity.

We will post this on our page, Facebook private group and website. A sign will also be posted on the church doors and an email sent to those on our distribution list. If you know of someone from our church or community who does not receive email or is not on facebook, please give them a quick phone call.

Do something special at home tomorrow for the 12th Day of Christmas! Pray 12 times, phone 12 people, write 12 letters, think of 12 ways you can become newly involved in the life of the church. Happy New Year!
