📖 WHY IS THE GOSPEL SOMETIMES INCENSED, AND SOMETIMES NOT?

Before proclaiming the Gospel, the priest or deacon may incense the Book of the Gospels as a sign of honour and reverence for Christ, who speaks to His people through the Gospel.

Incense is commonly used during more solemn celebrations, such as Sundays, feast days and special Masses. However, the Church permits its use at any Mass and it is not compulsory. It may be omitted during simpler celebrations or because of practical circumstances.

Therefore:

🔥 With incense: additional solemnity and visible reverence are given to the Gospel.

📖 Without incense: the Gospel remains equally holy and is proclaimed with the same authority.

Incense does not make the Gospel holy, it helps us express outwardly the honour already owed to Christ present in His Word.

“The priest incenses the book, if incense is used. Then he proclaims the Gospel.”
General Instruction of the Roman Missal, no. 134

WHAT HAPPENS BEFORE & AFTER RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION?

When you receive the Sacred Host, the correct gesture is actually a bow of the head. The Priest or Minister says:

“The Body of Christ.”

You respond:

“Amen” meaning, “Yes, I believe.”

Receive and consume the Host immediately and reverently. Then return quietly to your seat, kneel if able, bow your head and pray in silence.

Thank Jesus for coming to you, ask for His grace and pray for your intentions. Remain prayerful until the Communion Rite is completed.

“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.” John 6:56

TEACHING:
‎WHAT HAPPENS HERE DURING MASS?

‎This sacred moment is called the LAVABO, a Latin word meaning “I shall wash.” It takes place during the Preparation of the Gifts, before the Eucharistic Prayer.

‎Then the Priest, standing at the side of the altar, washes his hands, saying quietly:
‎Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity and cleanse
‎me from my sin.

‎The General Instruction of the Roman Missal says that this washing is a rite “in which the desire for interior purification finds expression” (GIRM, 76).
‎This ceremony of the Lavabo is to express the desire of interior purification. This action shows that we must be free from all sin. We perform actions with our hands, to wash our hands is the nearest thing to purifying our deeds’”

‎The water cleanses his hands outwardly, while his prayer asks God to cleanse him inwardly. Although the priest prays this prayer privately, this is another place where all the faithful could unite in prayer, asking God to purify our minds and hearts in anticipation of being in the True Presence of Christ himself on the altar.

🙏🏽 Go Well, Dear Brothers! 🇧🇼🇿🇲

As the school break comes to an end, we prayerfully wish Br. Andile Leburu, Br. Kago Motlhalamme and Br. Tumisang Bobi a safe journey as they return to St. Dominic’s Major Seminary and St. Bonaventure in Lusaka, Zambia, to continue their priestly formation.

Remain steadfast and trust the One who called you, for “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.” Philippians 1:6

Go well, Brothers. May the Lord guide your journey, grant you wisdom and perseverance, and may our Blessed Mother Mary continue to accompany and protect you. Be assured of our love, support and prayers always. 🙏🏽❤️

TEACHING:
Why do we make three small crosses before the Gospel???

Before the Gospel is proclaimed during Mass, We trace three small Signs of the Cross using the thumb

1. On the forehead✝️
Lord, may Your Word be in my mind.
We ask God to help us understand, remember and reflect upon the Gospel.
2. On the lips✝️
Lord, may Your Word be on my lips.
We pray for the courage to proclaim the Gospel and speak its truth through our words.
3. Over the heart✝️
Lord, may Your Word be in my heart.
We ask that the Gospel may dwell within us, deepen our faith and guide how we live.

This simple gesture is our silent prayer:

May the Word of God be in my mind, on my lips and in my heart.

It reminds us that we are called not only to hear the Gospel, but also to understand it, proclaim it and live it. ✝️📖

A QUESTION FOR US:

If Mary teaches us anything through the Assumption, perhaps it is this:
Are we living for the things that end with this life, or for the life that never ends?

Because one day, our earthly journey will also be complete. And when that day comes, the Christian hope is not annihilation.
It is resurrection.
It is glory.
It is life with God.
And Mary, already glorified in body and soul, stands before the Church as a sign of certain hope and comfort.😇
