πŸ‘‰πŸ½READ ONLY IF YOU WANT TO BE APART OF BUILDING OUR FUTURE. β—οΈβ—οΈβ—οΈπŸ‘‡πŸ½

I was born in 1973, the year our nation became a sovereign country, independent and ready to embrace that which the future promised for such a small country.

Through the years I've watch governments change, social conditions change, not all for the better. I've seen our country, its citizens and its politicians faced with so may relevant and difficult issues that affect not only us, but many more Bahamians yet to be born.

Often I'm left to ponder what have we done. I say 'we' because I cannot isolate, live in a bubble and pretend all will be well. And neither should you. The truth is, it isn't...well. And we are all to blame.

Indifference is even more dangerous than apathy. The truth is, while we do want better education for our children, we are not so sure as a country what that really means. We don't know if it's too late. We've made a muck of things.

Our lack of a succession plan for our country's political future has failed. I even question whether we had one at all.

I've learned quite painfully I might add, that we have no plan. No one has THE plan. If you're waiting for the plan, don't hold your breath. We're making it up as we trudge along...aimlessly.

We've allowed our voices to be heard only within the confines of our homes, restaurants and bars, private parties, churches, clubs, organizations and even on our jobs. We've used FB to comment and posts that what catches our fancy. It's all pretty superficial you know. But perhaps sometimes the superficial is just what is needed. It's a splendid distraction from reality. And it is extremely good at its job.

The real change won't come on Election Day. You know this right? No matter the outcome. And while I'd be the first to read from cover the cover any new government's plans or manifesto to bring about change once elected, I'm sure much 'thought' had been but into it. Yet, I dare say that unfortunately in this case, it isn't the thought that counts at all! Action and a clear vision and mission, with set goals and mechanisms to ensure accountability, sustainably and ultimately success is all that is acceptable. Everything else is just a band aide.

We don't need just a leader. We need leadership. We need leaders who will never forget who they work for. Leaders who will understand that education alone IS the key. We need to unlearn what we've learned. Teach our students that once giving the tools, they can have their voices heard and spark change. As adults, we must learn from them. Share our own stories with them. Pave the way and allow that which may be our egos or fears dissipate. Get out of the way!

On this Independence I am proud to be a Bahamian. I am because I've decided that this is my home and I'd be damned if I am to remain silent when it comes to leadership ineptitude. I no longer want to see emotional blackmail used on our people to instill fear or heaven forbid threats of retaliation or rather isolation.

Join me to have your voices heard, because doing nothing is sanctioning whatever comes. Women, children, young and old, let's get together, create the history our children and their children will remember for all time.

Summer break for my homeschooler means lots of rest, travel adventures, reading, writing, oh and because her classes are totally virtual, she can work on her biology, maths, and digital photography. No pressure. Traditional school calendars are so overrated. 😎

Oh I just love the classics! So many benefits to study the classical way.

We classical Christian educators have little trouble giving reasons for reading the Iliad. Despite its pervasive violence and darkness, it gave birth to much of the Greco-Roman and English literary traditions. Homer established the Western canons of storytelling, and his epic poems make us grapple w...

If you want your kids to have a love of learning and to enjoy reading books without being compelled by their school but rather because they love to read, let your children see YOU reading books! This is just as important as reading to your child.

They will be what they see.

Did you know...

Homeschooled children do better in college and in life? Look it up! It's true! My proof is seeing my own well rounded, intellectual, critical thinking daughter at work. She just got an A+ on a paper she did on child brides. She did her own research and did two pieces. One was all facts and one was fictional, from the point of view of a little girl whose parents promised her to a man several times her age. It was moving and prompted many questions about marriage, culture, and the loss of innocence.

Daughter: Am I?

Me: Are you really asking me this question?

Daughter: Are you?

Being a homeschool mom is such a gratifying way to live. Especially when you're student is your 16 year old daughter. I would never trade the bonding we experience each and every day for nothing in the world.

Homeschooling is more than just taking control of your child's educational experience, it enriches the bond between the parent and the child. 😊
