Energy is making headlines this election — but what’s behind the promises? 💡🤔

From rising bills to bold climate claims, it can be hard to know which energy policies stack up, and which fall short. As Christians, we’re called to seek truth, justice, and the common good — not only for ourselves, but for future generations. 👪🌱

Monday 28 April, join our forum designed for Uniting Church members and friends who want to think deeply and faithfully about the energy choices we face this Federal Election. Together, we’ll learn more about the major parties' policies, how they compare, and what they mean for the environment, cost of living, and a fairer, more sustainable future. 🗳️⛪💚

In April 2025, the Uniting Church in Australia (UCA) National Assembly released its Our Vision for A Just Australia resource which looks ahead to the 2025 Federal Election.
This resource is a collaboration of all those involved in justice work across the whole UCA.
Uniting Church President, Rev Charrisa Suli, has talked about the importance of talanoa, “a space of open, honest and respectful dialogue”, asking congregations to “enter into talanoa within our communities, reflecting on the values that shape our society and advocating for policies that uphold human dignity, justice, and peace.”

WALK TO SAVE A LIFE 🚶‍♀️🚶
The Uniting Church WA’s International Partnerships & Development Commission (IPDC) invite you to join them for Trek 4 Timor 2025 on Saturday 17 May starting at 1.00pm!

Gather members of your congregation, friends and family, or go solo, to take a walk to raise money for Lafaek Diak’s mobile health clinic in Timor Leste.
Operating out of the back of a 4WD, the clinic works its way around the remote villages of East Timor delivering medical aid and services, health promotion education and care, immunisations and clinics.

Starting at Mount Pleasant Uniting Church, choose from one of three walk options, between 6 – 8kms long, to end up at St Stephen’s Uniting Church in Applecross for afternoon refreshments.

You can register to walk and fundraise or simply support this great cause with a donation. Perhaps if you can’t get to the event you could also consider sponsoring a friend or member of your congregation!

𝗟𝗲𝗻𝘁 #𝟭𝟱: 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗱𝗼𝗺

Ekyen is a member of our partner, the Evangelical Christian Church in Tanah Papua (GKI-TP).

“We all have a noken (traditional woven bag) because it is part of our culture in West Papua. It’s how we carry around our ancestry.

The word is sometimes used to speak about life itself. To say, ‘my noken is good’ is to say you have a good life.

My grandmother made the one I have and carry with me everywhere I go. It takes many months to make a full-sized one. As she showed me how to make it, she taught me about dignity and serving others.

She didn’t really need to tell me, though, because I could always see it in how she lived her life in love and service to others.

My grandmother would say to me, ‘one day you will know how to make this, and you will carry the next generation inside it.’ Nokens are strong enough for mamas in the highlands to carry their babies on their backs. It frees their hands to do food gardening for their families.

But that type of subsistence gardening is becoming harder because of climate change and the pressures to adapt to modern ways. It is harder to grow potatoes and catch animals in the dryer months. Without our staple foods it affects our health and nutrition. People can buy rice if they have money, but we should be able to get healthy food from our gardens for free!

It’s why we need to hold on tightly to our roots. It's how we survive. Sometimes it can feel like it’s all we have.”
