International Women's Day 2024
Today, 8 March is International Women's Day and the UN Women theme for 2024 is 'Count her in. Invest in women. Accelerate progress.'

In introducing the theme UN Women Australia says "Womenโ€™s economic empowerment is central to a gender equal world. When women are given equal opportunities to earn, learn and lead โ€“ entire communities thrive."
Find out more about the IWD24 theme here - https://unwomen.org.au/get-involved/international-womens-day/

In a special International Women's Day edition of 'Humans of the Uniting Church' the Uniting Church in Australia features three Uniting Church women across three generations, including the Chairperson of the Presbytery of WA, Alison Xamon. You can read these stories on the UCA Assembly website here - https://uniting.church/humans-of-the-uniting-church-iwd/

We give thanks and celebrate the women in the Uniting Church and around the world.

13/02/2024

Thank you to Uniting WA for reminding us of this important moment in our recent history, today being the 16th anniversary of the national apology to Stolen Generations.

WORLD AIDS DAY 2023 - 1 DECEMBER
Let Communities Lead is the UN Theme for World AIDS Day this year. Here's a snapshot of the latest global data:
โ–ช๏ธ 39 million people were living with HIV in 2022
โ–ช๏ธ 1.3 million people were newly infected with HIV in 2022
โ–ช๏ธ 630 thousand people died of AIDS-related illnesses in 2022

UN Secretary General says:
"World AIDS Day arrives at a defining moment. AIDS-related deaths have fallen by almost 70 per cent since their peak in 2004, and new HIV infections are at the lowest point since the 1980s.

But AIDS still takes a life every minute.

We can โ€” and must โ€” end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
Reaching this goal means heeding this yearโ€™s theme: Let Communities Lead.
The path to ending AIDS runs through communities. From connecting people to the treatment, services and support they need โ€” to the grassroots activism pushing for action so all people can realize their right to health."

Will you Trek for Timor on Sunday 5 November?
This year the walk begins at Mount Pleasant Uniting Church, and takes you around the Mount Henry and Canning Bridges, taking in views of the Canning River. This family-friendly walk will be a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon and an opportunity to raise funds for the Mobile Health Clinic in East Timor. You could walk, scoot or ride!

Treks are our regular way of raising funds to support the mobile health clinic in East Timor run by our Uniting Church partners Fundaรงoun Lafaek Diak (FLD โ€“ the Good Crocodile Foundation). The mobile clinic goes out to a remote community twice a week from its base in Triloca (out of Baucau). The roads are rough tracks in many places and so very hard on the vehicle. Our efforts support the driverโ€™s salary and maintenance on the vehicle.

Pastoral Message and Prayer from Uniting Church WA Moderator, Rev Dr Ian Tozer following the Referendum on the Voice.
The text of the prayer is below:
___
O God of steadfast love and compassion,
You have made us in your image
so that we, too, may be people of love and compassion.

At this time when differences
in our country have been highlighted,
send your Spirit of Wisdom upon us,
so that we may take great care
in our interactions and conversations.

Now that the vote on the Voice is over,
open all hearts so that we may
treat each other with great respect,
whatever our views.

We pray for all of Australiaโ€™s First Peoples
and, in particular, the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress,
remembering our Covenant.

In all of our living, O God,
in all of our loving, O God,
in all of our listening, O God
may we be mindful of your call
for us to be agents of reconciliation
as we witness to your reconciling love for all creation
in Jesus Christ our Lord,
in whose name we pray. Amen.

SUSTAINABLE SUNDAY for the Season of Creation - 24 September 2023
"God gives us the strength and resources to work towards a more sustainable and life-giving future. There are good people in our world, motivated in hope, compassion and the courage to make a difference. There is ingenuity and inventiveness creating new options for the future. And most importantly, there is enough food and energy and resources for all, but only if we share what we have and do not give in to our greed or our fears." Rev Gordon Scantlebury, Chairperson, Social Justice Commission, Uniting Church WA.
