A few days ago I asked about fasting because I wanted to learn too.

After studying Scripture, I realized there are a few questions many of us have.

What is fasting?
Biblical fasting is voluntarily going without food for a time to focus on prayer, repentance, worship, or seeking God.

How long should you fast?
The Bible records different lengths of time. There isn't one required length. The purpose is more important than the clock.

Can you drink water?
Most fasts in Scripture included water. Some were absolute fasts for a short time, but those were exceptional.

What if I have health problems?
Use wisdom. God doesn't call us to ignore legitimate medical needs. If fasting from food isn't safe, ask yourself this:

What is taking my attention away from God?

For some people, it might be social media.
For others, television, entertainment, or something else that consumes their time.

The goal isn't simply to give something up.

The goal is to spend that time drawing closer to God.

I'm still learning, but one thing became clear to me...

Fasting isn't about making God hear us.

It's about helping us hear Him.
