John 1:1-2

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning.

What does it mean by the word “Word”? Obviously, the Word pertains to Jesus Christ. Word is Jesus Christ Himself. Jesus is the Word of God.

The term Word is translated from the Greek word “Logos”. He is the “Logos” of God. Why did John choose to describe Jesus as the Word? Because the word of God is the manifestation of God’s power in the creation of the world.

The Word is what God “used” to create the world.
As written in the Old Testament:

And God said, “Let there be light”, (Gen. 1:3)
And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” (Gen. 1:6)
And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.”
And it was so. (Gen. 1:9)
Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. (Gen. 1:11)

From these scriptures, we can see that the work of creation was done by the Word of God. The universe was made from when God sent forth His Word.

And as was said in Genesis 1, He was with God in the beginning. He was with God during the time of creation, which is the beginning, because it was Jesus who was sent forth. God was not alone during the creation, for Jesus was with God during the creation.

It is clearly stated in Genesis 1:26: 26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

Take note, God said “Us.” He is talking to someone here. He’s definitely not speaking to His angels. Nothing in the Bible that says mankind is created to the likeness of the angels.

Simply put, Jesus Christ created the world. And mankind was created in His image.

Colossians 3:10: “we are being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator”

Not only in Genesis that says this, in Hebrews 1:2 we can also learn the same: but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.

Even in Colossians 1:16, Paul says the same thing about Christ: 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17

He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” This is Paul describing the Supremacy of the Son of God being the creator and the administrator of all things.

John 1:1

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

One the most magnificent things about the New Testament, is that we have 4 gospels which provides their own way of looking at Jesus in His life here on earth. We’ve got 4 perspectives which provides 4 different accounts of Jesus’ earthly ministry. And they have different focus on Jesus which is reflective on how they have started their writing.

Luke started with his account of the history of Israel revolving around John the Baptist’s conception and birth.

Mark’s book jumped straight ahead to John the Baptist’s prophetic and baptismal ministry, and how he proclaimed the coming of the Messiah.

Matthew started with the Genealogy of Jesus, explaining His lineage, his family tree, with his ancestry starting from Abraham.

But it's interesting to note that John goes all the way back beyond the time of Abraham and even beyond the creation of the world. In the beginning, in the beginning of what? In the beginning before everything.

The word beginning was only written there for us to understand it in the context of timing. For we are bound by the concept of time, and a fixed point in time has to be established in an attempt to make us understand. John was saying that even before the universe ever began, Jesus is already there.

Like God the Father, Jesus is outside the realm of time and space. And that is the concept of eternity. Eternity is timelessness, to be unbounded by the concept of time. He is already existing in all eternity. And Jesus even mentioned this in one of His prayers: John 17: 4-5

4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.

In His prayer, Christ is saying that He shares the same glory as with the Father for eternity. And in the same chapter, Jesus goes on with His prayer: John 17: 24

24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. “Before the creation of the world” is one way of saying before everything existed. Simply put, before the time itself, Jesus is being glorified with and by the Father.

The Purpose of John’s Gospel.

John 20: 30-31.

(30) Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. (31 ) But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Stay tuned in this page as we start on a guided journey in exhorting the Gospel of John. For John’s purpose of writing this book is for us to believe that Jesus is the Savior of the world, and the Son of God. And in believing, you gain eternal life in Christ.

And from this spiritual standpoint we stay focused towards one direction. Amidst all attempts of contradictions and distractions, we stand firm in our belief, that Jesus Christ is God.
