Choking HazardTuesday, November 22, 2011
We either sink deep roots into Christ, or we allow the cares of the world to choke our spiritual lives.
‘Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain.’ (Mark 4:7)
Jesus told a parable about a farmer going out to sow the seed. He talks about various kinds of soil on which the seed landed. Some of the seed fell among thorns – this stands for people who hear the Word, but go on their way being choked by life’s burdens, riches and pleasures.
There are a lot of things in life that can choke out the Word of God. In younger life it can be educational goals. In mid-life it can be family responsibilities. In older age it can be health. These all choke the Word of God by leading us to worry, rather than to trust.
The life is in the seed, but the potential for its growth lies in the soil. Bad seed on good soil accomplishes nothing good, but good seed on poor soil will also come to nothing too. The seed of the Word of God is always good and living, but the soil in which it will germinate and thrive is the disposition of our hearts. We can have hearts that choke the Word by earthly cares. Or we can have hearts that receive, believe and act on it.
Is anything choking out the Word of God in my life?
