It is with praise and thanks to God that we finish this year and look to God’s plans for us in 2026. And how we value the hope and light we have to share with our new neighbourhood, especially at the end of a week mourning the attack and murder of Jewish people celebrating Hanukkah at Bondi Beach a week ago. In such darkness and demonstration of evil we celebrate the light of Christ coming in the darkness and knowing that the light cannot be overcome or extinguished.

We praise God for his goodness in providing the right people at just the right time in the right places to make Jesus known. The CMS Checkpoint tells me of dear friends stepping up again to go, this time to Uganda. Greg Harris’s (Bush Church Aid) email tells me today of two more “new” people stepping up for ministry in new places in Western Australia. Two weeks ago, our Diocese met and elected our new Archbishop (Brad Billings, currently in Melbourne) and we thank God that he and his wife can come as our Chief Shepherd as early as March ’26. And locally our congregations are developing a “to be officially recognised partnership” between Lutherans and Anglicans on KI. Our new choir (Alban Voices) – 3 months old and 16 voices strong – has had 3 gigs in this Christmas season, full of “gusto” we are told by one of our audiences, and keen to keep working together to refine our skills and musicianship.

Our church community welcomes any and all who are looking to celebrate Christmas in worship and thanks to God for the gift of his Son Jesus to us to show us how much he loves everyone of us. Perhaps you don't know yet that Jesus loves you beyond all measure. Come and join us to hear the story of God's love-gift to us that we celebrate at Christmas time. We gather at 6.15pm on Christmas Eve at St Columba's Penneshaw and 10am on Christmas Day at St Alban's Kingscote. COME AS YOUR ARE - BRING FAMILY AND FRIENDS - BE PART OF THE STORY.

Sunday Sign-Off
God, send out your light and your truth, and let them lead us: let them guide us to your holy hill and your dwelling. … Let us put our trust in God for we will praise him yet, who is our deliverer and our God. (Psalm 43.3, 6 adapted)
At just the time I should have been signing off with you last night, I was unexpectedly on the late ferry to get ahead of the gale forecasts for Mon and Tues. So it’s a sunny and windy Monday morning as I reflect on a week of church and family community. Tuesday evenings reading and discussing Luke’s gospel at Penneshaw are helpful in growing our understanding of the man Jesus “who went about doing good” (Acts 10.38) and Jesus the Son of God who has the power and authority of God, with God. Jesus is not just a good example of the “perfect man” living the “perfect life” that we might copy, he is also our protection, strength, wisdom and all-round enabler that makes living a “Jesus-life” possible. We’re going to keep digging into these matters and see how God changes us in the process to be more like a child of God.

1. NEXT SUNDAY (29th June)
We will all gather at St Columba’s Penneshaw at 10am for worship and Commissioning of our Parish Councillors. THEME: Caring for Creation and Each Other. A Share lunch follows at Peter Denholm’s home.
The Lutheran congregation is heading to Alison Buck’s in the West.
2. Mid-week Community Gatherings: Tuesday 5pm Penneshaw; Thursday 5.30pm @ 7 Osmond, Kingscote.
3. Are you interested in working with young teens? Come to an “I am interested” meeting on Friday 27th June (this week) at St Alban’s at 4,30pm.
4. Rev Brian Jeffreys and Heather will be in the parish from 5th July to the 15th leading Sunday worship gatherings and providing Pastoral Care while I am on holidays.

COMING UP: The GREEN season!
This long green season of growth and fruitfulness stretches in the Church Year from now until December. Having remembered the story of Jesus’ birth, life, death, resurrection, ascension and the receiving of the Holy Spirit Friend, we now concentrate on daily life in the way of Jesus and our relationship with God. We’ll be reading of Jesus’ life and teaching and noticing the Spirit’s ongoing work in the world. We will learn to pray consistently, build one another up in our faith, and live out God’s love in serving one another every day. Welcome to ORDINARY TIME and bear fruit in God’s grace.

Sunday Sign Off – TRINITY SUNDAY 15 June
From today’s gospel: John16.8-11 (The Message). Jesus says to his followers, “When the Friend (the Spirit of Truth) comes, … He will show that their refusal to believe in me is their basic sin; that righteousness come from above where I am with the Father, out of their sight and control; that judgment takes place as the ruler of this godless world is brought to trial and convicted.
As Jesus has this conversation with his closest friends, he knows that on the following day, at the time of the offering of the Passover sacrifices in the temple, he will be hung on a Cross and left to die by those who cannot believe that he comes from their Father God. And in this same despising and cruel action, Jesus bears the sin – this rejection of God and God’s Son – and transforms this death into a victory over sin. Death and Sin are put to death. He dies only to rise on the third day to bring life and hope. Sin is dealt with. We think about sin as being “the things I have done wrong” or “the bad things that trip me up”. Someone claims that they are basically a good person; “I don’t wish other people harm; I support charitable causes; I drive safely”. And yet how we simplify sin. Jesus tells his followers that sin is nothing to do with being good or bad or slipping up in our diet or neglecting the poor. Jesus says that our sin is not believing; underselling him – making him unimportant to us – ignoring him – and not giving our total allegiance to him. It’s about a relationship with a friend who loves us unconditionally. It’s love not based on what we do or don’t do; it’s a love that is, because he made us and believes in us and wants us to connect and build a relationship with us. We are the ones who decide to accept this gift or not. Not accepting is sin and that is forgivable if we ‘fess up. Jesus says, “Follow me; live my way; be like me; let the Holy Spirit fill you, teach you and encourage you with love and wisdom.” Being in a right relationship with Jesus is the way to a right relationship with God and in that we have freedom to live life abundantly and full of hope.
