IRAN - ON THE CUSP OF A NEW BEGINNING
I don't like writing long FB posts, preferring summaries that point you to our website where all our blogs are easy to find, read and share. But as the situation in Iran right now is current , very extremely dynamic, and has critical world relevance, Israel and Christians everywhere, I've posted it here in full. Links to the website and blog pages are included below as well. I've added a great flag graphic someone created for the 2022 uprising in Iran which includes a dove as the centrepiece instead of the Islamic flag symbol or the former Lion symbol promoted by civilian protesters, which I suspect will be on the new Iranian flag is the much needed regime change proves successful. God bless.
Webite Blog: Iran – on the Cusp of a New Beginning
1 March 2026
FREEDOM, DEMOCRAY AND EQUALITY
Overnight (Sat, 28 February) we saw the beginnings of a military offensive by Israel and the US that essentially seeks to replace the existing theocratic Islamic terror regime of the past 47 years with a more democratic, liberal and secular model. It also shows the depth of international concern over the regime’s terrorist activities, both direct and via proxy.
The hoped for outcome of this war for the heart and soul of Iran is that the Iranian people will have a voice once more and not be oppressed, and slaughtered, by their own government to keep them in check. Its early days yet, but as Christians we should be praying for the freedom and safety of the people of Iran, praying and believing for a more successful change of regime than we saw in Afghanistan or Iraq, or many other Arab Spring and Winter countries. Of course Iran is Persian, not Arabian, but the desire for regime change is the same.
As Sunday unfolded Iran fought back, though they are no longer the regional power they once were and the US clearly controls the air and the sea. Later in the day it was announced that the supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, an evil man following a draconian ideology who has now gone to meet His maker and learn the difference between truth and lies. He was killed in the initial bombing, along with a good number of Iran’s most senior leadership. As I write this much is still undetermined, and this war may go or for days, weeks or months yet, but with the US and Israel in the picture it is highly likely the Iranian people may soon see their Berlin Wall day, despite calls from typical critics for it all to end before it has really begun.
TRUE FREEDOM ALWAYS HAS A PRICE
I am not a warmonger by any means, and like nothing more than a peaceful and secure life. I thank God for Australia, my adopted home, with its solid western Judeo-Christian heritage, values and freedoms too-often taken for granted. We have much to be thankful for as a people.
My parents were young teenagers when war broke out with Germany in 1939 - too young to be called up. But as soon as they were old enough both joined the Army at the close of WW2 because that was what people did back then. Mum was never posted overseas but Dad was, and as a soldier travelled to many foreign countries, mostly in the Middle East, but also Japan as a peacekeeper, finally Korea, where war broke out in 1950. He ended up being wounded by enemy fire and sent home to recover, which turned out to be the end of his army career. It was his generation’s Vietnam. It is the sacrifice of many that has earned us the freedoms we enjoy today, and as Anzac Day fast approaches we do well to remember, lest we forget.
BRAVERY BEYOND MEASURE
The bravery of the Iranian people is extraordinary, and inspirational. They cannot realistically overturn the Iranian regime on their own, but gave it their best shot at a very high price in death and injury at the hands of their own government forces. Such bravery obviously inspired the support they finally needed on Saturday, and now regime change is a realistic possibility. We could say the same for the people of Ukraine. Like the Battle of Brittain where England faced impossible odds with Hi**er controlling most of Europe, it is still possible for the David’s of this world to slay the Goliaths, and for good to conquer evil. However, there is always a cost, and the Ukraine people are still facing that every day, fighting a different type of evil the that we pray God will one day deal with.
There is much more to come from this historical event unfolding before our eyes, but for me and my house we support the Iranian people in their efforts for freedom, a secular democracy and equality. We also oppose just about everything that represents radical Islam, which is anathema to our Western Judeo-Christian democracy, and completely incompatible with our way of life in Australia and the West.
TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGING
While our blogs are primarily about biblical topics and encouragement, such momentous things happening on the world stage are hard to ignore. What we should always bear in mind, however, as believers, is that God is always in control. Nothing that happens anywhere, or for any length of time, is above or beneath His divine attention. Neither is it free from His divine intervention if He chooses to engage. Like the clever but complex lyrics of Bob Dylan’s 1964 folk-protest song, “The Times They Are A-Changing”, we want to believe times are a-changing for the people of Iran, and for the better.
Often we can only see what is going on in our corner the world - those things that affect us directly – but when God starts to work His wonders it can range from the small and personal to international, world changing events. Such is the breadth and depths of the God we serve. When that occurs change is inevitable. Just look at what happened to Egypt and Babylon in biblical times. The Thessalonians also complained bitterly about the Christians that were “turning the world upside down” (Acts 17:6), referring to the impact of Paul and Silas’ teaching, accusing them of causing global chaos and defying Caesar by proclaiming Jesus as King of kings and Lord of lords. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?
We are certainly living in interesting times! When such times come our way it is always best not to forget that this world, and all who dwell in it, ultimately belong to Him:
“The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers” (Psalm 24:1-2)
“For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine. If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine” (Psalm 50:10-12)
Man has great freedom to use or abuse that which God has entrusted into our care. We are not owners of anything, only stewards, who will one day be called to give an account (Rom 14:12). The godless will eventually fall, and be judged accordingly to their works and faith choices unless they repent and seek the forgiveness only Jesus can offer, because He bears a name that is above every name and will not be mocked forever:
“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Phil 2:9-11)
So let us pray for Iran, for the Iranian people and what they must face in coming days, and for a godly outcome to this war that the eyes of the world are now very much focused upon.
