Oliver and Jesper Barrett, both former students of Maitland Christian School, have already made remarkable strides in the equestrian world. Oliver graduated in 2022, while Jesper completed his Year 11 studies in 2025. Their parents, Craig and Prue Barrett, graciously welcomed me to their property, where I had the privilege of speaking with their talented sons about their equestrian achievements.
Just this past week, Oliver reached an impressive milestone, topping the FEI World Eventing Young Riders Rankings and securing third place in the World Under 25 Rankings.
Prue shared her perspective on the sport, describing it as a journey of highs and lowsâwhat she calls its âswings and roundabouts.â A horse may struggle one week, only to deliver a personal best at the next competition.
Oliver embodies humility and dedication. Where he strives for excellence in all conditionsâwhether hot, smoky, dusty, raining or windyâand his commitment is evident in his daily routine. Mornings begin at a racing stable, followed by long hours working with horses for the family business. His grounded nature and resilience shine through, even on the toughest days.
Itâs no surprise that Oliver and Jesper are known as quiet achievers. They steadily refine their skills away from the spotlight, not for accolades, but because they recognize their God-given gift to train and ride horses.
Both brothers expressed how blessed they feel to have parents deeply involved in the sport. Together, the family manages the demanding tasks of feeding, watering, exercising, washing, rugging, and preparing horses to perform at their best.
Most of the horses they compete with are bred on their propertyâa mix of Thoroughbred and Warmblood cross horses, alongside a few Off-the-Track Thoroughbreds brought in for training.
Oliver also reflected on his time at Maitland Christian School, where his woodwork teacher, Mr. Trad, taught and inspired his woodwork skills. Since graduating, Oliver has built five cross-country jumps at home, which now form part of his training routine.
Though they work in the same industry, Oliver and Jesper each bring their own passion and dedication to the sport. Their journey is a testament to perseverance, humility, and faith. Our prayer is that they continue to walk in Godâs calling on their lives and, âdo all for Godâs gloryâ.
