Reformed in our theology. We trust wholly in the sovereign grace of God in and over all things. We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, inerrant, authoritative Word of God. We believe in one God, who eternally exists in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; one in essence, having the same divine attributes and per

fections, with each person fulfilling distinct roles. We believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth. We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory. We believe that for the salvation of lost and sinful man, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential. We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life. We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation. We believe that water baptism (by immersion) and communion are the two sacraments ordained by Christ, visible signs of God’s covenant of grace. Baptism is the sacrament of entrance into the Church by which believers publicly identify with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Communion is the sacrament whereby believers corporately remember Christ’s body given and his blood shed for their forgiveness. We believe that sanctification is the process, beginning at regeneration, whereby God conforms his people to the image of Christ through his Word and Spirit. By grace, Christians grow in holiness and love for God and others throughout their lives as they submit to Jesus, obey God’s word, and walk by the Spirit in fellowship with other disciples.

“As for the saints in the land,” that is, holy ones, godly ones, the ones who treasure God and live for him, “they are the excellent ones in whom is all my delight” (Psalm 16:3) — all my pleasure, all my joy, which does not mean that he delights in the saints, the godly ones, instead of God, or above God, but because of God.

In other words, as the psalmist contemplates all the kinds of people in the world — all the worldly people, all the powerful people, all the influential people, all the people that could scratch his back — he says there is one kind of people that make me really, really glad: people that treasure God.

“There is one type of people that should make us really glad: people that treasure God.”

I wonder if you’re sitting there thinking: “I don’t like the Christians I know, and I have more fun with all my unbelieving friends.” If that’s you, I think you should ask two questions.

First: Do you know any Christians? I mean, Christians? I don’t mean church-goers, I mean radical people who lay their lives down because Jesus means everything to them. They are servants of the world because Jesus has moved into their lives, turned everything upside down, broken them free from their love affair with the world and their ego and power and money and s*x, and they’re radical people. Do you know anybody? Maybe you don’t know anybody like that to dislike. That’s the first question you should ask.

Second, you should ask is this: Why would it be that you, a professing Christian, would find more joy in people who find no joy in what is your primary joy? What would that mean? Those are the two questions you should ask.

LOSSES OVERCOME FOR ALL GOD’S ELECT

“And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten.” (Joel 2:25)

Yes, those wasted years over which we sigh shall be restored to us. God can give us such plentiful grace that we shall crowd into the remainder of our days as much of service as will be some recompense for those years of unregeneracy over which we mourn in humble penitence. The locusts of backsliding, worldliness, lukewarmness, are now viewed by us as a terrible plague.

Oh, that they had never come near us! The Lord in mercy has now taken them away, and we are full of zeal to serve Him. Blessed be His name, we can raise such harvests of spiritual graces as shall make our former barrenness to disappear.

Through rich grace we can turn to account our bitter experience and use it to warn others. We can become the more rooted in humility, childlike dependence, and penitent spirituality by reason of our former shortcomings. If we are the more watchful, zealous, and tender, we shall gain by our lamentable losses.

The wasted years, by a miracle of love, can be restored. Does it seem too great a boon? Let us believe for it and live for it, and we may yet realize it, even as Peter became all the more useful a man after his presumption was cured by his discovered weakness. Lord, aid us by Thy grace."
