We were delighted to welcome back Fr Anthony Walsh OP to lead our Semester 2 Retreat and Mass!

Drawing on the Dominican tradition, Fr Anthony invited us to reflect on what it means to seek the good. He reminded us that gratitude is the proper response to the gifts we receive. We flourish through charity — in communion with God and with one another.

These reflections were beautifully echoed in today's Psalm: 'Lord, your love is eternal; do not forsake the work of your hands'. We are first recipients of God's love – a love we did not create – and our response is to receive with gratitude and to give generously in return.

We are deeply grateful to Fr Anthony and the Dominican Order for their continued support of the ANU Catholic Society. We also thank John XXIII College for their warm and generous hospitality.

Dear friends,

Today the Church celebrates the feast of Pope St Pius X, one of the great popes of the modern era and a saint whose witness remains deeply relevant today.

Born into a poor family, St Pius X never lost his concern for the vulnerable and destitute, even after being elected to the Chair of St Peter. He was known for his simplicity, pastoral care, and profound love for the people entrusted to him. Above all, he sought to lead souls closer to Christ.

One of his greatest legacies was fostering a renewed love for the Eucharist. He encouraged frequent reception of Holy Communion and lowered the age for First Holy Communion, helping generations of Catholics encounter Christ more deeply in the Blessed Sacrament. St Pius X also guided the Church through the Modernist crisis, a period of significant confusion and error concerning the faith. Recognising the importance of safeguarding the truths entrusted to the Church, he courageously defended Catholic orthodoxy and stood firm against secular governments that sought to restrict the Church's freedom and influence.

For university students, St Pius X is a particularly powerful example. Amidst widespread confusion within society and significant hostility towards the Church from political authorities, he remained steadfast in proclaiming and defending the truth. In a culture where truth is often treated as subjective, negotiable, or secondary to convenience, his witness reminds us that the pursuit of truth is worth defending, even when it is unpopular. He shows us that fidelity to the truth need not be accompanied by bitterness or hostility, but can be lived with humility, charity, and genuine concern for others.
May we imitate his love for Christ, his devotion to the Eucharist, and his courage in remaining faithful amidst the challenges of his age.

Join us 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝟮𝟯 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, for a Dominican Retreat and Mass led by Fr Anthony Walsh OP!

Fr Anthony is the Master of Novices at St Laurence’s Priory in Adelaide and an alumnus of both John XXIII College and ANU. He will reflect on Dominican answers to the problems facing our world today.

This is a great opportunity for prayer, reflection, and fellowship in the Dominican tradition.

This Friday, 𝟭𝟰 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, we will offer the Vigil Mass for the Solemnity of the Assumption at 𝟲𝗽𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗹. Mass will be preceded by Eucharistic Adoration and Confession from 5pm.

The Assumption is a Holy Day of Obligation.

[𝗙𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗦 𝗢𝗙 𝗦𝗧 𝗗𝗢𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗜𝗖 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗦𝗧 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗬 𝗠𝗔𝗖𝗞𝗜𝗟𝗟𝗢𝗣]

Today we celebrate the feasts of two saints who are very dear to the ANU Catholic Society.

St Dominic was the founder of the Dominican Order. Although the Order is home to many great Doctors of the Church — including St Thomas Aquinas and St Catherine of Siena — St Dominic is perhaps best remembered not for a particular body of teaching, but for the way he inspired others to draw near to God and contemplate the mystery of heavenly things – their exceeding greatness, power, and beauty.

St Mary MacKillop was the founder of the Sisters of St Joseph. She was one of Australia’s first great Catholic educators. By the time of her death, her order had already educated around 12,000 children. Yet, like St Dominic, St Mary MacKillop was foremost a person of prayer and contemplation. It was in prayer that she discerned God’s will, and through prayer that she found the courage to educate young Australians despite much adversity.

St Mary MacKillop is the patron saint of Australia. And as a Society with strong Dominican roots, St Dominic is also very close to our hearts. It is perhaps fitting, then, that 8 August is the founding date of the present form of the ANU Catholic Society.

May we learn from both St Dominic and St Mary MacKillop to 'seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness'.

Last month, the ANU Catholic Society held its Annual General Meeting, celebrating another successful year and electing a new Executive Team for the year ahead.

We were delighted to welcome the Hon Justice Simon Steward AC of the High Court of Australia to deliver a public address on jurisprudence and theology last night. The event served as the ACT launch of the Australian Catholic Students Association National Conference, which will be held in Sydney from 3–5 July 2026.

Justice Steward spoke on the influence of theology on the development of equity, particularly in relation to the doctrine of unconscionable conduct. The lecture prompted rich discussion amongst attendees about equity, theology, and the role of normative standards in the law.

We were delighted to welcome Fr Anthony Walsh OP for our Dominican Retreat and Mass on Sunday!

Fr Anthony spoke about Dominican spirituality and the pursuit of truth, encouraging us to see our studies not as separate from our faith, but as a form of prayer. He reflected on St Thomas Aquinas' understanding of truth as the conformity of the mind to reality. To study creation seriously, then, is not merely an academic exercise, but an opportunity to grow in knowledge of the Creator Himself — the One who is 'the way, the truth, and the life'.

Before the retreat, many of us enjoyed lunch generously hosted by John XXIII College. During this time, we had the opportunity to speak with Fr Anthony and hear stories from his time at John’s and ANU.

We are very grateful to Fr Anthony and the Dominican Order for their continued support of the ANU Catholic Society. We also thank John XXIII College for their warm and generous hospitality.
