Scripture reading with family works best when it feels doable, not like another homework assignment.
Here’s a simple way to make it stick:
1. Keep it short*
5-10 min is enough. One parable, one psalm, or 3-5 verses. Attention spans drop fast if it drags. Mark 4, Luke 15, and Psalm 23 are solid starters.
2. Make it interactive*
Don’t just read and close. Try:
- *Ask one question*: “What stood out to you?” “Where do you see yourself in this story?”
- *Let kids act it out*: The Good Samaritan gets way more real when someone plays the bandit.
- *Connect to today*: “When did we see patience like this at home this week?”
3. Pick a rhythm that fits your family*
Some families do it nightly before bed. Others do Sunday breakfast only. Consistency > length. Even 3x a week beats a perfect 7-day plan that dies in week 2.
4. End with prayer and one takeaway*
“Lord, help us to be more like the forgiving father this week.” One line you can all remember going into the day.
*Quick 10-min example for tonight:*
- Read: Luke 15:11-32 - Prodigal Son
- Ask: “Who do you relate to more - the son or the older brother?”
- Pray: Thank God for being a Father who runs to meet us, even when we mess up.
If your kids are little, use a children’s bible or the YouTube video “The Bible Project” for visuals first, then read the actual verse.
