The Legitimacy of The Grand Priory of Australia – Ordre du Temple de Jérusalem

In recent months, questions have occasionally been raised regarding the standing, authority, and legitimacy of The Grand Priory of Australia within the international structure of the Ordre du Temple de Jérusalem (OTJ). As Grand Prior, I believe it is important that our members, friends, and supporters understand the documentary basis upon which our authority rests.

The legitimacy of any modern chivalric order is ultimately derived from its constitutional instruments, statutes, letters patent, and lawful acts of recognition issued by the competent authority of that Order.

The attached Letters Patent speak clearly for themselves.

Letters Patent No. 31 of 2025, issued from the Magisterium of the Ordre du Temple de Jérusalem, formally proclaims and consecrates Australia as an active and faithful Grand Priory of the Order. This is not merely a statement of goodwill or fellowship; it is an official act of recognition issued under the authority of the Grand Master and Magisterial Officers of the Order.

Further, Letters Patent No. 32 of 2025 formally appoint, invest, and consecrate Chevalier Gregory J. Fellows KCTJ to the office of Grand Prior of Australia, conferring the rank and dignity of Knight Grand Officer of the Temple of Jerusalem (KGOTJ) and charging him with the governance and administration of the Grand Priory in accordance with the Statutes and Rules of the Order.

These instruments were duly issued under seal and signature by:

✠ The Grand Master of the Order
✠ The Grand Chancellor General
✠ The Grand Secretary General

and are expressed as acts undertaken:

“in accordance with the principal documents and traditions of the Order, and by virtue of the duties and prerogatives inherent to the functions in our office(s).”

Accordingly:

✅ The Grand Priory of Australia exists by virtue of formal Magisterial proclamation.

✅ The Grand Prior of Australia holds office by virtue of formal Magisterial appointment and consecration.

✅ The Grand Priory of Australia operates as a recognised constituent body of the Ordre du Temple de Jérusalem.

✅ Its members participate in the Order through a lawful and recognised jurisdiction established by Letters Patent.

These documents establish both the jurisdictional authority of the Grand Priory and the constitutional authority of its Grand Prior within Australia.

While every modern Templar organisation traces its heritage through various historical traditions and successions, legitimacy within a contemporary Order is determined not by internet commentary or personal opinion, but by the governing instruments of that Order itself. In this case, the authority is expressed through formal Letters Patent issued by the Magisterium and signed by the highest officers of the Order.

The Grand Priory of Australia therefore continues its mission with confidence, humility, and fidelity to the ideals of Christian Chivalry, humanitarian service, and Templar tradition, acting under the authority entrusted to it by the international leadership of the Ordre du Temple de Jérusalem.

As always, our focus remains not on titles or privileges, but upon service to God, service to humanity, and service to one another.

On Knighthood, the Accolade, and Recognition as a Chevalier

There appears to be some misunderstanding in certain circles regarding the distinction between being an Honorary Member of a chivalric order and being recognised as a legitimate Chevalier according to the Statutes and Rules of the Ordre du Temple de Jérusalem.

The traditional principle of chivalric law is clear: the accolade creates the Knight.

Once a person has validly received the accolade from a legitimate chivalric order possessing a recognised Fons Honorum, that person has received knightly status. A later reception into another chivalric order does not necessarily require that the person be “made a knight” all over again. Rather, the receiving order may recognise the existing knightly character of the candidate and admit him accordingly.

This distinction matters.

A Chevalier admitted into the OTJ on the basis of recognised knightly credentials is not thereby reduced to being merely an “honorary” member. Recognition as a Chevalier under the Statutes and Rules of the Order is a matter of lawful admission, acceptance, and standing within the Order’s structure.

An Honorary Member is a different category altogether. It generally implies a courtesy association, distinction, or honorary connection, not necessarily full knightly standing within the Order.

Therefore, where a Knight has previously received a valid accolade and is then admitted into the OTJ as a Chevalier, the proper position is that he is a recognised Chevalier of the Order unless the governing statutes expressly say otherwise.

The issue is not personal opinion, gossip, or repeated mislabelling. It is a matter of chivalric principle, constitutional recognition, and proper terminology.

To call a duly recognised Chevalier merely “honorary” is not a harmless mistake. It misrepresents his status, diminishes the authority that admitted him, and creates unnecessary confusion regarding the legitimacy of his standing.

In chivalry, as in all honourable institutions, words matter.

A Knight is not made legitimate by rumour, nor diminished by it.

There comes a point in every person’s life when they begin to ask deeper questions.

What does it mean to live a life of purpose?

How do we remain faithful in a world filled with noise, distraction, division, and uncertainty?

How do we transform noble ideals into daily action?

For centuries, the Knights Templar have captured the imagination of the world. Yet beyond the legends, myths, and romanticised histories lies a profound spiritual truth: the original Templars lived according to a disciplined Rule of Life that shaped their character, strengthened their faith, and guided their service to God and humanity.

Today, that same need for spiritual discipline and purposeful living remains as relevant as ever.

That is why I wrote Templar Rule of Life – A Contemporary Bernardine Rule for a Secular, Ecumenical, Christian Knighthood.

This book is not merely about history.

It is a practical guide for modern men and women who seek to walk a path of Christian discipleship, honour, service, humility, and chivalric virtue in the contemporary world.

Drawing inspiration from the timeless wisdom of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux and the early Templar tradition, this modern Rule of Life has been carefully adapted for today’s secular, ecumenical Christian knightly vocation. It speaks not only to members of Templar and chivalric organisations, but to anyone seeking a structured framework for spiritual growth, ethical leadership, and meaningful service.

Within its pages, readers will discover:

⚔️ A contemporary Rule rooted in Christian values and timeless wisdom.

⚔️ Practical guidance for prayer, reflection, self-discipline, and personal development.

⚔️ Principles of servant leadership and ethical conduct.

⚔️ A framework for balancing faith, family, work, and community responsibilities.

⚔️ Inspiration for living a life marked by courage, compassion, integrity, and purpose.

In an age where many feel disconnected from enduring values and authentic community, this book offers something increasingly rare—a clear pathway towards becoming the very best version of ourselves.

The Templar vocation was never simply about wearing a mantle or carrying a title.

It has always been about becoming.

Becoming more faithful.

Becoming more disciplined.

Becoming more compassionate.

Becoming more courageous.

Becoming a living example of Christian virtue in action.

Whether you are a member of a Templar Order, a student of Christian spirituality, a leader seeking greater purpose, or simply someone searching for a deeper way of living, Templar Rule of Life offers a compelling guide for the journey ahead.

The world does not need more spectators.

It needs people of conviction.

People of faith.

People of service.

People willing to stand as lights in the darkness.

If that resonates with you, I invite you to explore this book and begin your own journey of transformation.

THE CONTEMPORARY CRUSADE

The word Crusade is one of the most powerful and misunderstood words in history.

For some, it evokes images of medieval armies marching beneath banners bearing the Cross. For others, it recalls centuries of conflict, sacrifice, courage, and conviction.

Yet for the modern Knight or Dame, the true Crusade is neither military nor political.

It is spiritual.

It is humanitarian.

It is the daily commitment to stand for what is right in a world that often finds it easier to compromise.

The vocation of a contemporary Templar is not to conquer lands but to conquer indifference.

Not to seize territory but to reclaim virtue.

Not to wage war against peoples, but to oppose the forces that diminish human dignity, destroy hope, and undermine faith.

Our battlefield is the modern world.

Our weapons are compassion, integrity, wisdom, courage, and service.

Our shield is faith.

Our banner is the Cross.

And our mission is to serve Christ through service to humanity.

The modern Crusade begins each day when a Knight or Dame chooses duty over convenience.

When they defend the vulnerable.

When they comfort the suffering.

When they advocate for justice.

When they feed the hungry.

When they support the lonely.

When they stand beside those who have been forgotten by society.

These are the victories that matter.

These are the campaigns worthy of our devotion.

In every generation, humanity faces new challenges.

Today we confront loneliness amidst hyper-connectivity.

Division amidst unprecedented communication.

Material abundance alongside spiritual poverty.

Violence, extremism, addiction, corruption, and despair continue to wound communities across the world.

The contemporary Crusade calls us to respond not with hatred, but with hope.

Not with anger, but with compassion.

Not with judgment, but with understanding.

Not with fear, but with courage.

The modern Knight or Dame is called to become a guardian of values that transcend politics, nationality, denomination, and culture.

We are defenders of human dignity.

Custodians of compassion.

Champions of charity.

Advocates for peace.

Builders of bridges.

Protectors of faith.

This is why Christian Chivalry remains relevant in the twenty-first century.

The world does not need more warriors seeking enemies.

It needs more servants seeking opportunities to help.

It needs men and women prepared to stand firm when truth is challenged.

Prepared to remain faithful when belief is unfashionable.

Prepared to demonstrate kindness when cruelty appears easier.

Prepared to sacrifice personal comfort for the welfare of others.

The contemporary Crusade is fought in hospitals, schools, aged-care homes, disaster zones, homeless shelters, community organisations, churches, and charities.

It is fought by volunteers who quietly give their time.

By mentors who guide the next generation.

By chaplains who comfort the grieving.

By first responders who rush toward danger.

By humanitarian workers who serve in places of hardship.

By ordinary people performing extraordinary acts of kindness.

Every Knight and Dame who lives according to the principles of Chivalry participates in this great mission.

The Cross we wear is not a symbol of power.

It is a reminder of sacrifice.

A reminder that true leadership begins with service.

A reminder that Christ Himself came not to be served, but to serve.

This is the essence of the contemporary Crusade.

A lifelong commitment to become a force for good.

To leave every place better than we found it.

To defend those who cannot defend themselves.

To strengthen our communities.

To protect our faith.

To uphold our values.

To serve humanity with humility.

And when history judges our generation, may it not remember us for the battles we fought against one another.

May it remember us for the lives we touched.

The hope we inspired.

The suffering we relieved.

The faith we preserved.

And the example we left for those who would follow.

For the modern Knight and Dame, the Crusade continues.

Not across distant deserts.

But within our communities.

Within our families.

Within our hearts.

And through every act of faith, charity, and service, we advance the Kingdom of God one step further into the world.

THE SPIRITUAL PILGRIMAGE OF THE MODERN KNIGHT

When most people hear the word pilgrimage, they imagine a physical journey: ancient roads winding through Europe, weary travellers making their way to Jerusalem, Rome, Santiago de Compostela, or the sacred shrines of Christendom.

Yet for the modern Knight or Dame, the greatest pilgrimage is not measured in miles, but in transformation.

It is the journey of the soul.

The vocation of Christian Chivalry has always been about more than swords, mantles, ceremonies, or titles. While these outward symbols carry deep meaning and connect us to a noble heritage stretching back centuries, they are not the destination. They are signposts along a much greater road.

The true pilgrimage of a Templar is the lifelong pursuit of becoming the person God calls us to be.

It begins with a simple stirring within the heart—a desire to serve something greater than oneself. A longing to live according to higher principles in a world often characterised by division, selfishness, and uncertainty. It is the call to step beyond mere belief and embrace a life of active faith expressed through service, compassion, discipline, and courage.

Like every pilgrim, the modern Knight or Dame begins imperfectly.

None of us arrive fully formed.

We come with our strengths and weaknesses, our hopes and fears, our successes and failures. The journey of formation teaches us that Christian Chivalry is not about claiming moral superiority. Rather, it is about recognising our imperfections and committing ourselves to continual growth.

The mantle we wear does not proclaim that we are perfect.

It proclaims that we are striving.

The modern Templar pilgrimage is unique because it takes place not in monasteries or castles, but in everyday life.

Our battlefield is not found in distant lands but within our homes, workplaces, communities, and hearts.

It is the daily struggle to choose kindness over anger.

Truth over convenience.

Service over selfishness.

Forgiveness over resentment.

Hope over despair.

Every act of charity becomes a step upon the pilgrim road.

Every moment of compassion becomes a milestone.

Every sacrifice made for the benefit of another becomes an offering placed upon the altar of humanity.

In a secular and often fragmented world, the Knight or Dame serves as a bridge-builder. We seek not to divide but to unite. We recognise that while we may come from different nations, traditions, churches, and backgrounds, we are all fellow travellers upon the human journey.

Our ecumenical vocation calls us to focus upon what binds us together rather than what separates us.

The modern Templar seeks Christ not merely within churches and cathedrals, but within the faces of those who suffer, those who struggle, and those who have been forgotten.

For Christ himself taught:

“Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

The spiritual pilgrimage therefore becomes a movement from self-centredness toward selfless service.

From pride toward humility.

From knowledge toward wisdom.

From belief toward action.

Throughout history, pilgrims carried a staff to support them along difficult roads. Today, the virtues of Chivalry serve as our staff and compass.

Faith guides our direction.

Hope sustains us during hardship.

Charity gives purpose to our actions.

Justice keeps us steadfast.

Fortitude strengthens us in adversity.

Prudence teaches discernment.

Temperance reminds us of balance.

These virtues become the provisions that sustain us along the journey.

There is another important truth about pilgrimage.

No pilgrim travels entirely alone.

We journey alongside our Brothers and Sisters in the Order. Together we encourage one another, share burdens, celebrate victories, and provide strength during times of trial. Fellowship is not merely a pleasant addition to the journey—it is an essential part of it.

The Order exists not simply as an organisation, but as a community of pilgrims walking a common path.

Each Knight and Dame is both traveller and guide.

Each learns from those who have walked before and leaves a trail for those who will follow.

And so the pilgrimage continues.

Not toward earthly glory.

Not toward prestige.

Not toward recognition.

But toward a deeper relationship with Christ and a greater capacity to serve humanity.

The road may be long.

It may sometimes be difficult.

There will be moments of doubt, challenge, and fatigue.

Yet every faithful step brings us closer to the ideals we profess and the Kingdom we seek.

The modern Knight Templar does not journey to Jerusalem merely to find a holy city.

He journeys so that his own heart may become one.

May we all continue faithfully upon this sacred road, serving Christ through service to humanity, carrying the light of Chivalry into a world that desperately needs both hope and compassion.

Non Nobis Domine, Non Nobis, Sed Nomini Tuo Da Gloriam.

“Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto Thy Name give glory.”
