THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY

Theme this week: Our anchor in the storm.

Read Philippians 4:6-7: "do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Read Isaiah 26:2-3: "Open the gates, that the righteous nation that keeps faith may enter in. You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you."

(The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com)
Lowering an anchor from any boat is a matter of certainty and trust. We are sure and we trust that this piece of metal will hold the boat steady.
The same should be true of our faith. We need to know that the anchor God provides will also hold firm in spite of all the storms.
It easily happens that we don't want to throw out the anchor because we think the storm is too fierce and that the anchor will be swept along with us by the storm.
God makes the promise that He will preserve us. He will give us a peace beyond our understanding and He will watch over our hearts and minds in Jesus.
We need to respond to this with gratitude and trust. When we trust in Christ, we will realise that even though the storm around us is terrifying, we remain safe. He will never leave us.
Prayer: Thank You, Father, that we can cast all our cares on You. Thank You for the peace we receive and the certainty that our hearts and minds are being watched over. Give us the confidence and assurance that You will always be there. Amen

THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY

Theme this week: Our anchor in the storm.

Read John 16:33: "I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world."

Read 2 Corinthians 4:8-9: "We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; ..."

(The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com)
We are never promised a life without storms. We do however receive the promise of Christ's victory in the midst of these storms.
In the world, we often believe the lie that God has abandoned us when we are hit with storms. Yet on the cross we see how God is present even in the worst storm.
Even though God forsook Jesus on the cross, He was never absent. He was there and in control. The crucifixion was the way Christ achieved victory.
We can therefore take heart because the outcome of our struggle in the world is already certain. Because Jesus died and rose again, victory was achieved.
It must give us peace, the Victor is never absent — even when the worst storm is raging around us.
So don't be afraid. You can know for sure that the storm will hit you and you can rest assured that you are not alone in this. The One who has already weathered the worst storm is with you and He will preserve you.
Prayer: Our Father in heaven, we praise You because the battle over the world has already been won in Jesus. Strengthen us with this knowledge that we may be encouraged and stand firm when the storms of life seem too great. Grant us the joy of knowing that nothing will separate us from Your love. Amen

THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY

Theme this week: Our anchor in the storm.

Read Hebrews 6:19: "We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, ..."

Read Romans 5:5: "and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us."

(The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com)
Even if a boat has an anchor, it is useless if it is just hanging there. An anchor only has value when it hooks onto something to attach the boat.
Our hope in this life is exactly the same. It's not something that hangs loose, it's something that keeps us fixed and steady in the storms of life.
We must realise that because Christ has already died, risen and ascended, and because the Holy Spirit has already been poured out, we are anchored in God. Nothing or no one can take these benefits away from us.
Our hope, therefore, can never be destroyed; the anchor that keeps us grounded cannot break free from us.
Even if we feel that our faith is weak, the anchor holds us to God. It gives us the certainty that we will not be shipwrecked in this world.
Prayer: Our Father, thank You that our hope in this world does not lie in ourselves or our own efforts. Thank You that we may have Christ as our anchor who keeps us steadfast. Hold us tight, so that we will not drift away when the storms of life befall us. Amen

THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY

Theme this week: Our anchor in the storm.

Read Matthew 8:24-25: "And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, ‘Save us, Lord; we are perishing.’"

Read Psalm 107:29 (ENG 83): "He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed."

(The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com)
Sometimes it feels like the Lord is asleep while the storms rage in our lives. It feels as though he's not heeding our need.
We see how the disciples have a very logical and human fear. Yet, today we know that they were blinded by the immediate circumstances in which they found themselves. They saw the storm around them, but not the Savior with them.
It's a truth for our life. We see our crisis, it paralyzes and confuses us. We don't think about the Lord being with us. He is not just a spectator of our lives, He is with us every moment.
When we cry out to the Lord from out of the storm, he reminds us that He rules over all things. Even a devastating storm has no choice but to calm down in obedience.
His presence and dominion over our lives should comfort and strengthen us in all circumstances. He will intervene when called, that's guaranteed.
Prayer: Lord, forgive us when we lose our focus on You during life’s storms. Thank You for the reminder that you are always with us and that even the greatest storm must bow in obedience to You. Amen

THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY

Theme this week: Our anchor in the storm.

Read Matthew 7:24-25: "Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock."

Read Psalm 62:2: "He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken."

(The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com)
In our life in this world, the question is not "if" we’ll be hit by a storm, but rather "when" it will hit us. Things can change in the blink of an eye and completely knock our feet out from under us, tossing us back and forth.
We read however that the difference between standing and falling does depend on the sturdiness of the house, but in the strength of the foundation.
That is what Christ teaches us. We cannot find our security or steadfastness in our outward circumstances or our own abilities. We find it in listening and obeying His Word.
Building on the Rock means anchoring your whole life in Christ.
It's not a guarantee that there will never be storms, but it is a guarantee that when the storms rage around us, it is His power that sustains us and not our own abilities.
Prayer: Our Father, we praise You for the solid foundation You give us in Jesus. Help us not to trust in our own abilities, but only in Your Word. Strengthen us by Your Spirit to seek Your strength and guidance for our lives daily. Amen.

THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY

Today's Theme: Steadfast in the Faith by the Grace of God

Read 1 Peter 5:8-9: "Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world."

(Bible available online at www.biblegateway.com )

Peter says it twice in these last few verses of his letter:
verse 9: … firm in your faith!
verse 12: Stand firm in it!
When it comes to our faith, we need to be immovable.
Not even the worst circumstances may cause us to falter in faith, for we are steadfast in faith by the grace of God.
There is a solid foundation for the believer's steadfastness: The grace of God!
This is the beauty of the faith we profess: The power behind it lies not in ourselves or in any human aspect of it, but in God.
God to whom all the power belongs forever. Almighty God who also gives all grace and who has called us to share in eternal glory in Christ.
God is the source, the owner, the giver of all grace, and He wants to give it to us — abundantly and in all love.
He has called us and chosen us to share in the glory of Christ.
Herein lies the steadfastness of our faith: that we believe in Jesus Christ.
Prayer: We praise You, Father in heaven, You who are greater than we can pray or imagine. What wonderful knowledge it is that Jesus is also the rock of my faith! You hold onto me by Your grace. Amen

THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY

Today's theme: We are Christians, the bearers of Jesus Christ's name.

Read 1 Peter 4:16: "Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name."

(Bible available online at www.biblegateway.com )

Jesus Himself taught us this with the well-known Beatitudes of the Sermon on the Mount:
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
"Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account."
As suffering Christians, we need to know that our suffering for the name of Christ is a sign that we too share in the glory of Christ.
We live in the presence of God Triune — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — who works for our salvation.
That is why our response to suffering for the sake of Christ’s name is so important.
Again, a stark contrast is made between the world and the believer.
To the world, suffering and persecution are a cause for shame, for worldly persecution indicates a contempt for the persecuted. Just think of the shame we attach to someone who is persecuted for his crimes.
With the believer, however, there should be no shame. We need to live before God with a clean conscience. When we suffer because we are Christians, we should not be ashamed. As bearers of the name Christian, we should glorify God with it.
We must strive to bear the name of Christ in word and deed, for He bore the penalty for our sins in our place.
Prayer: We praise You, Father in heaven, You who are greater than we can pray or imagine. Help me to bear the honorary title of Christian to the honour and glory of my Lord. Amen

THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY

Today's Theme: The Sufferings of Christ and Its Comfort for Our Lives

Read 1 Peter 3:17-18: "For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God's will, than for doing evil. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,"

(Bible available online at www.biblegateway.com )

As believers, we need not wonder or be afraid of the suffering we have yet to endure on this earth. Even though we have to endure suffering, we can be sure that Jesus Christ emerged victorious.
Suffering in the sense that we will not want to repay evil with evil, but with unity, compassion, love, goodness and humility.
We will answer those who insult and cause us heartache with a blessing. Blessing in the sense that we pray for our enemies and have their well-being at heart.
As believers, we must seek and pursue peace in word and deed. Like a hunter who searches for his prey for days on end and then chases it with all diligence, we must pursue peace in life. Pursue in the knowledge that our actions reflect the hope we profess.
We hope in Christ's suffering.
We should be terrified by the suffering we have to endure at the hands of men and the world, but rather be ready to bear witness to the hope we profess.
In holy reverence for Christ the Lord, we are to count Him as our only Lord. He is our Lord who has set us apart for Him by redeeming us with His precious blood. When you acknowledge Christ as LORD, by having such a holy reverence for Him, it means that you are His property.
Prayer: We praise You, Father in heaven, You who are greater than we can pray or imagine. I thank You for the comfort of Christ's suffering. The comfort that I belong to Him too. Amen

THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY

Today's theme: We live in gratitude for the goodness of the Lord.

Read 1 Peter 2:1-3: "So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good."

(Bible available online at www.biblegateway.com )

We live in gratitude for the goodness of the Lord.
This gratitude is also expressed in the two commands that Peter gives us.
If we have heard the gospel of Christ or as Peter calls it, the living and eternal Word of God, then our actions will show that we have taken it to heart.
Your whole look changes. We see it these days in the reality television shows where they take people off the street and give them a total make-over. They change their hairstyle, their clothes, and even their faces! There is, in fact, a metamorphosis taking place in people's lives.
Likewise, believers must also undergo a metamorphosis. Peter says if you have heard of Jesus, then you must stop! This cessation, as it stands in Greek, literally means putting off something, such as clothes and all the things by which people can identify you and that are connected to your body in some way. Thus, the command to put away brings out the image of someone who is in the process of taking off dirty clothes. We must completely put away that filthy behaviour by which the unbelievers are identified. It is:
any form of evil, any desire to offend or hurt our fellow human beings
all deception as falsehood by which we seek to seduce or deceive people by pretending to present the truth, while promoting the lie
any hypocrisy with which I pretend to be sinless, when my life does not bear witness to it
jealousy, in which I desire my neighbour’s earthly possessions for myself
and slander, by which we gossip, curse, or even just put our neighbour at a disadvantage
With all of this, we need to stop. People shouldn't be able to identify us according thereto anymore.
This brings us to the second command: to yearn like newborn babies for pure spiritual milk, so that we can grow through it and gain salvation.
Our yearning for the Word of God, the spiritual milk, must govern our whole life. That milk will make us grow. Grow in the sense that we will take off our old clothes (old self) and our lives will be marked by what God teaches us in His Word.
Prayer: We praise You, Father in heaven, You who are greater than we can pray or imagine. Help me, O Lord, to put away the old self and feed me with the pure spiritual milk of Your Word. Amen

THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY

Today's Theme: Praise to God in the Midst of Our Earthly Suffering

Read 1 Peter 1:3-4: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,"

(Bible available online at www.biblegateway.com )

How must we give God the glory even in times of trouble?
We rarely feel joyful when we suffer.
We tend to rant and rave rather than praise God when we have to endure suffering.
Yet we are called to praise God in 1 Peter 1:
To praise God with all joy in the midst of our suffering.
To hold on to the faith and hope we profess, regardless of the circumstances in which we may find ourselves.
In this entire letter, the suffering we have to endure is weighed against the hope that we as believers cherish.
Based on the hope we profess, we must act a certain way when we endure suffering for Christ's sake.
After all, our hope is based on a living faith in God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Prayer: We praise You, Father in heaven, You who are greater than we can pray or imagine. We thank You that we always have hope, no matter how dark the world around us may seem. Amen
