RPCV Community Photography Competition - what does Axedale look like through your eyes?

RPCV are currently developing a Master Plan for Axedale Remembrance Park, providing a long-term vision for how the cemetery will be cared for, used and developed into the future.
As part of that work, we want the community to help us capture more than the cemetery itself. We want to capture something of Axedale as a place, including its landscape, nature, history and community character.

We’re inviting you to share your photographs across three themes:
🌿 REMEMBER | Axedale Remembrance Park
🦜 NATURE | The Axedale Landscape
🏡 COMMUNITY | Life in Axedale

You don’t need to be a professional photographer. It might be a favourite landscape, a monument or memorial, local wildlife, a familiar place, or simply a small detail that feels distinctly Axedale.

Selected photographs and their stories will feature throughout the final Master Plan, helping us tell the story of Axedale through the eyes of its community.
🎁 There’s also a $150 local Axedale gift card to be awarded in each category.

Entries are open until Thursday 15 October 2026, and you can enter as many photographs as you like.

The Eaglehawk Remembrance Park is ablaze with colour on a beautiful spring morning in Central Victoria. The golden glow of the daffodils mixed with traditional roses looks stunning. We still have some golden wattle flowering and white blossoms outside the main office building, covering the grounds with petals that look like snow. Spring is a nice time to visit your loved ones or to just have a quiet walk through the remembrance parks and enjoy the seasonal colours of nature.

Vale Russell Goldfield Jack AM

Following the State Funeral Service at Ulumbarra Theatre on Saturday, Russell Goldfield Jack AM will make his final journey to Bendigo Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest.

On behalf of the Remembrance Parks Central Victoria Trust Board, Community Advisory Committee, Management and Team, we extend our sincere condolences to Russell's family, friends and the many people whose lives he touched.

Russell's family has invited the community to attend a traditional Cantonese mourning ceremony at Bendigo Cemetery following the State Funeral Service. The ceremony will provide an opportunity to accompany Russell on the final part of his journey and pay their respects.

Those attending are asked to:
- allow extra time for travel and parking
- park appropriately and follow volunteer directions
- keep cemetery roads accessible
- be mindful of uneven ground and take care when moving through the cemetery
- respect the cemetery grounds, memorials, neighbouring residents and other families visiting.

The State Funeral Service at Ulumbarra Theatre is expected to conclude at approximately 1:00pm. A map showing the location of the mourning ceremony at Bendigo Cemetery is included with this post.

It was a privilege for RPCV to be part of the unveiling and blessing of the beautiful memorial stone that honours the 35 Chinese migrants that are laid to rest in the Heathcote Cemetery and whose graves were historically unmarked or incorrectly recorded in the 19th century. RPCV congratulates the Bendigo Chinese Association 大金山中華公會 and the Victorian Chinese Memorial Foundation for leading this important initiative. The ceremony was attended by the RPCV's CEO and the Chair and Members of RPCV's Community Advisory Committee as well as a range of dignitaries and community leaders. This initiative represents an important step in restoring dignity and strengthening cultural identity within our communities. The granite memorial stone was blessed by Chinese community elders and offerings were made by all present to honour the people buried in the cemetery.

Mother’s Day is a time of love, gratitude and remembrance.

Across our parks, many families visit to spend quiet moments honouring mothers, grandmothers and mother-figures who hold a special place in their lives. We warmly welcome visitors throughout the day and ask everyone to be mindful of others who may also be reflecting and remembering.

Our cemeteries remain places to pause, share memories and celebrate the lasting impact of those who cared for us.

On ANZAC Day, we pause to remember and honour the men and women who served, and those who gave their lives in defence of their country.

Our cemeteries hold the resting places of veterans and community members connected to service across generations. Today we reflect on their sacrifice and the enduring ANZAC spirit of courage, mateship and service.

Today, we observe Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, a time to remember the six million Jewish people and the many others who were persecuted and lost their lives during the Holocaust.

Within our Bendigo cemetery, a dedicated Jewish section stands as a place of quiet remembrance and reflection. It is a reminder of the lives lived, families formed, and the enduring legacy of the Jewish community in our region.

We pause to honour memory, acknowledge history, and reaffirm the importance of dignity, respect and understanding for all people.

Easter is a significant time of reflection for those of Christian faith and a popular period for families to visit and honour loved ones.

Our parks remain places of quiet remembrance and care, and we welcome visitors throughout the Easter period. We encourage everyone to take their time, be respectful of others, and allow space for reflection.

What should our community cemeteries of the future look like? RPCV has completed its long-term vision and strategy called Cemeteries as Living Spaces. It reimagines these spaces as inclusive, multifunctional environments that complement the natural landscape and respond to community needs. The strategy aims to deliver social and environmental benefits—such as wellbeing, cultural connection, and sustainability.
Cemeteries have immense social, community, ecological and historical value - that’s why we see them as Living Spaces. As RPCV continues to develop its plans for the future, we look forward to engaging more often with the community to ensure that needs and expectations are met.

Honouring the past, enriching the future The concept of the public cemetery first emerged in the nineteenth century, and today’s memorial parks continue many of these traditions. They provide spaces for laying loved ones to rest, honoring their lives, and practicing cultural and spiritual rites.
