GET HEAVENLY WISDOM 🎚️

📜TEXT: JAMES 3:14-18📜

🔑📖 KEY VERSE: "But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace" (JAMES 3:17, 18).

Martin Luther once shared a thought-provoking story about two goats that met on a narrow bridge over deep water. With no room to backtrack or fight, one goat decided to lie down, allowing the other to pass safely. The moral here? Strive for peace, even if it means setting aside your own pride, but never compromise your principles. True wisdom is gentle, pure, and considerate, always showing respect for others.

In this passage, James explains his message about the tongue by illustrating what a truly wise person looks like - someone whose wisdom shines through their good deeds. He draws a clear line between earthly and heavenly wisdom, describing the former as rooted in envy, selfish ambition, and deceit. This worldly wisdom is not just unspiritual; it is demonic, creating chaos and all sorts of evil. On the other hand, heavenly wisdom is pure, peace-loving, gentle, approachable, and overflowing with mercy and good deeds. It is impartial and sincere, leading to a rich harvest of righteousness.

The danger of living by worldly wisdom is devastating - it can blind people to its harmful effects, steering them away from God. Those who rely on earthly wisdom often end up justifying negative traits, such as envy, hypocrisy, arrogance, and conflict, mistakenly believing these are necessary for survival. This kind of thinking is spiritually deadly. In our relationships, pursuits in life and career advancements, we need wisdom to navigate challenges that will come our way. Within the church, those who claim to be wise but are driven by an insatiable desire for power create division and inflate their own egos, proving that their so-called wisdom doesn't come from above.

In contrast, heavenly wisdom is life-giving. It guides those who possess it along the path of salvation, moulding them into portraits of holiness and righteousness. When Scripture tells us "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding" (Proverbs 4:7), it encourages us to pursue the wisdom from above - wisdom that not only saves but also preserves us for God's eternal kingdom.

✍🏽 THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The difference between godly wisdom and worldly wisdom is where they come from.

DIVINE GUIDANCE FOR THE FAITHFUL

KEY VERSE: “And Naomi said unto her daughter in law, Blessed be he of the LORD, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead. And Naomi said unto her, The man is near of kin unto us, one of our next kinsmen.” - (RUTH 2:20).

TEXT: RUTH 2:19-23

Marty Via’s American family’s relocation to Waycross, Georgia, is a remarkable example of divine guidance for the faithful heart. After a construction accident, Marty felt God’s calling to ministry through his pastor’s gentle nudge. Through prayer, the name “Waycross” came to him and his family, even though they had never heard of the town. Trusting God, they inquired and moved there despite the challenges of finding a job or understanding their purpose. One night, Marty received specific instructions to launch a benevolence mission, providing food and clothing to those in need. This mission became a renowned testament to faith and God’s provision.

Much like Marty Via, Ruth had chosen to follow the path of faith to the unknown land after losing everything in her native tribe of Moab. But the invisible hands of God guided her as she ‘hoped against hope’ while being prodded on by Naomi, her mother-in-law. Simple faith out of a sincere heart has unfailing dividends for those who hold on to God, regardless of mounting odds against them. The hand of providence led Ruth to the fields of Boaz, the relative of her late husband, who eventually married her.

Let nothing stand in your path of faith if you sincerely believe that all things are possible with God. Ruth was a humble widow. She defied age. She discounted the deficit of her marital status as a widow and did not let her foreign pedigree deter her. God remembered her and rewarded her faithfulness. God knows your travails and trials to be settled maritally. He knows your aspirations to have a breakthrough in your career and business. Hope still. If you don’t despair, He will guide His agents to you who will fulfil your aspirations.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: When faith and faithfulness collide, expect an explosion of blessings.

MERCIFUL GOD

KEY VERSE: “Then the angel of the LORD answered and said, O LORD of hosts, how long wilt thou not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which thou hast had indignation these threescore and ten years? And the LORD answered the angel that talked with me with good words and comfortable words.” - (Zechariah 1:12,13).

TEXT: ZECHARIAH 1:7-15

Years after the death of America’s beloved 30th president, John Calvin Coolidge Jr., his remarkable story became public knowledge. In the early days of his presidency, Coolidge awoke one morning in his hotel room to find a burglar digging through his pockets. Coolidge engaged the thief in quiet conversation and discovered he was a college student who had no money to pay his hotel bill or buy a ticket back to campus. The president counted $32 out of his wallet and handed it over to the trembling thief, declared it to be a loan, and advised the young man to leave the way he had come, to avoid the Secret Service. Unbelievable, but true!

In similar fashion, God’s treatment of Israel and His desire to point them on the right path is truly amazing. Instead of indignation, God said, “I will help them.” God truly was displeased with Israel, but just like President Coolidge’s mercy for the thieving college student, He chose to help. God, in His mercy, always chooses pardon over punishment. While His anger boils against any furtherance of evil, His mercy pursues every avenue for reconciling men to Himself. “Thus saith the LORD of hosts; I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy” (Zechariah 1:14).

God’s mercy is still available for all today. Though He does not delight in the sin and rebellion of the world, still He does not delight in their death and eternal damnation. It is His mercy that has been keeping the world from falling off the precipice, but this will not last forever.

While His mercy is at work, let’s quickly plunge into God’s healing stream. This is the best option for the sinner. The day of grace will not last forever. All those who scorn and reject God’s offer of mercy today will have to face His eternal judgment. Making peace with God through Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, enables us to enjoy the full blessings of God’s providence and grace.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The most damning act is to shun God’s mercy.

DAILY MANNA:

TOPIC: INEVITABLE RETRIBUTION.

TEXT: JEREMIAH 50:25-30.

KEY VERSE: “Call together the archers against Babylon: all ye that bend the bow, camp against it round about; let none thereof escape: recompense her according to her work; according to all that she hath done, do unto her: for she hath been proud against the LORD, against the Holy One of Israel” (Jeremiah 50:29).

MESSAGE:
One of the most dangerous effects of sin is that it gets to a point where it lulls a person into thinking that he is invincible. He develops an inexplicable confidence that whatever he does, he would get away with it, that there is no price to pay for moral failures and selfish pursuits at the expense of other people, for achieving personal ambitions with devastating impact on others. It is, of course, because such people do not really know God; otherwise, they would be frightened by the prospect that their sins would eventually catch up with them.

As it is with individuals, so it is with nations. Babylon was once at the height of its power in the world. It was merciless and powerful. And when God needed a nation that was fully steeped in wickedness to exact punishment on rebellious and disobedient Judah, Babylon came in handy. She served God‘s purpose enthusiastically, maybe too well, to the extent that judgment was then set against her. God mustered the most vicious armoury to be unleashed on Babylon. It was invaded by a superior power, in this case, the Medo-Persians, who destroyed Babylon in 539 BC. All her wealth and institutions of power were wiped out.

The Jews who escaped to Israel to announce the utter destruction of Babylon were in so much shock and awe. God had amassed the most intimidating army to “recompense her according to her work, according to all she hath done, (to) do unto her.” She became proud and started acting against God, until her population and her once-feared army was completely decimated.

We must never forget at all times that sin has consequences. We can cover up our actions, but it is only for a time. Sooner or later, it will be exposed, and then, the repercussions will be rolled out. Judgment against sin does not usually wait only for eternity when its consequences are essentially total and permanent, but it comes in this life also, when the sinner is beset with numerous and inexplicable problems. Those who enjoy sin and the rewards it brings to them must quickly turn from their evil ways and put their faith in Jesus Christ. Otherwise, if they wait for God’s hammer of judgment to fall, the consequences would be utterly devastating.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
A person may escape from the scene of his evil, but he can’t escape the sentence of it.

GOD’S UNFATHOMABLE LOVE

KEY VERSE: “The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.” - (JEREMIAH 31:3).

YEXT: JEREMIAH 31:1-14

The love of God for humanity is unfathomable. This love is manifest at the creation of human being (Genesis 1:26-28). Created by God, we are also blessed by Him: “…God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion…”

The depth of God’s love is demonstrated in His giving us His only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to save us from our sins. “…that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them…” (2 Corinthians 5:19).

Let’s count our blessings through His love. One, spiritual adoption of all humans into God’s family is made possible through His love (Jeremiah 31:1). Two, He promised restoration for those who have gone astray and assured that “they shall not stumble” anymore. Three, for those who embrace the love of God, the avalanche of God’s blessings and provision as revealed in our text includes His protection and care (verse 10). Four, redemption from the enemy that is stronger than man (verse 11), abundant provisions (verse 12). Five, concerning His own, God said “…their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all” (verse 12). What a blessing! He further promised: “…for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow” (verse 13).

Has life been treating you harshly as it happened to the children of Israel in Egypt? Embrace the love of God today by turning away from what displeases God in your life. The fullness of God’s love has been demonstrated in His giving Jesus Christ to us. Consider surrendering your life to Christ today and enjoy a fuller demonstration of God’s love and care. We can only reciprocate God’s love by walking in obedience to His word.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Those who can’t work out the measurement of God’s love for them are using the wrong measuring tape.

GARBAGE IN, GARBAGE OUT

KEY VERSE: “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” - (Philippians 4:8).

TEXT: PHILIPPIANS 4:8-9

American preacher Ray Pritchard made this remarks about the popular acronym, garbage in garbage out (GIGO), on July 24, 1994: “When the computer revolution had just begun, the pioneers in the field coined a brand-new word. In those days, not many people knew how to operate a computer and those who did made many mistakes. Sometimes, the neophyte experts entered the wrong data only to discover (that) universal truth” about just what computers can do.

What is true of computers is also true of the human mind. That comparison is apt because the human mind has often been compared to a computer. In fact, the human mind is far more complex than the most advanced computer ever designed. But the basic principle of GIGO or Garbage In, Garbage Out is still true: what you get depends on what you put into it. Paul the apostle drew those parallels in this brief sermon to the Philippians. He recommends, through divine inspiration, the need to watch what we input into our minds. Before thoughts are accepted and processed, they should, of necessity, pass through these gates: Are they honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report? Is there any virtue in them? Can this be a praiseworthy idea? Paul believes that if our input passes these important filters, our output will bring joy and excitement, with happy living.

The human mind and the computers are similar in many ways. Both use electrical signals to send messages. The brain uses chemicals to transmit information; the computer uses electricity. Even though electrical signals travel at high speeds in the nervous system, they travel even faster through the wires in a computer. Both transmit information. The average person is said to have 10,000 separate thoughts each day. That works out to be about 3.5 million thoughts a year. Simply imagine what happens to us if those thoughts are negative. Negative thoughts can destroy one’s life. We require the spiritual weapons of warfare to erase, pull down and bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

The ultimate conclusion from this important passage is about safeguarding our lives by controlling our thoughts. Impose the recommended necessary gates in your mind to filter in what should engage your thoughts in the course of our brief, earthly sojourn. This is the secret to a happy and fulfilled life.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: For a quality living, be careful to select the plants that grow in your heart’s garden.
