SERMON TITLE:
“IF SALVATION CAN BE LOST… WHO REALLY SAVES YOU?”
Key Text:
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.”
— Romans 8:1 (KJV)
INTRODUCTION: A QUESTION THAT SHAKES THE SOUL
Beloved church, today we are not discussing a small doctrine.
We are not debating a side issue.
We are dealing with the very foundation of Christian assurance.
If salvation can be lost… who really saves you?
Is it:
Christ’s finished work on the cross?
OR
Your ability to remain faithful until the end?
This question matters because:
It affects how we live
It affects how we pray
It affects how we worship
It affects whether we live in peace or in fear
Many believers today are saved but not secure,
redeemed but not resting,
forgiven but not free.
Why?
Because Scripture is often mixed, not rightly divided
(2 Timothy 2:15).
Let us go to the Word of God — not emotions, not traditions, not denominations — but Scripture rightly understood.
PART I: GOD’S DEALINGS BEFORE THE CROSS (OLD TESTAMENT ECONOMY)
1. God Has Always Been Holy — But He Has Not Always Dealt the Same Way
God never changes in character,
but His administration with humanity has changed across history.
“God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past…”
— Hebrews 1:1
In the Old Testament, God dealt with humanity primarily through:
Covenants
Law
Conditional obedience
2. The Mosaic Covenant: Blessing Was Conditional
At Mount Sinai, God gave Israel the Law.
“Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant…”
— Exodus 19:5
Notice the word IF.
Blessing depended on:
Obedience
Faithfulness
Perseverance under the Law
The Law was holy, just, and good (Romans 7:12),
but it was never meant to save.
“Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified.”
— Romans 3:20
3. The Holy Spirit Before the Cross Was Not Permanently Indwelling
This is where many believers get confused.
In the Old Testament:
The Spirit came upon people
The Spirit could depart
Example: King Saul
“But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul.”
— 1 Samuel 16:14
David prayed:
“Take not thy holy spirit from me.”
— Psalm 51:11
That prayer made sense then.
It does not reflect the believer’s position now.
4. Salvation Was Real — But Not the Same as Today
Old Testament believers were:
Saved by faith
Looking forward to the promise
“These all died in faith, not having received the promises.”
— Hebrews 11:13
They were justified by faith,
but they were not placed into Christ.
That mystery was hidden.
PART II: THE LAW’S PURPOSE — TO PREPARE FOR CHRIST
1. The Law Was a Schoolmaster
“Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ.”
— Galatians 3:24
The Law:
Revealed sin
Exposed human inability
Prepared the world for a Savior
Martin Luther said:
“The law is a hammer that crushes self-righteousness.”
The Law never produced assurance —
it produced conviction.
2. The Blood of Animals Could Never Perfect the Conscience
“For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.”
— Hebrews 10:4
Sacrifices:
Covered sin temporarily
Pointed forward to the Lamb of God
PART III: THE CROSS — THE GREAT DIVIDE OF HISTORY
1. “It Is Finished” — A Complete Work
When Jesus cried:
“It is finished.”
— John 19:30
The Greek word is Tetelestai —
meaning:
Paid in full
Completed
Never to be repeated
Jesus did not say:
“I have done My part, now you do yours”
He said:
IT IS FINISHED
Charles Spurgeon said:
“Christ did not come to make salvation possible, but to make it certain.”
2. The Law Was Fulfilled, Not Continued
“Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believeth.”
— Romans 10:4
The Law no longer defines our standing with God.
3. Redemption Was Accomplished, Not Offered Conditionally
“Having obtained eternal redemption for us.”
— Hebrews 9:12
Not temporary redemption.
Not probationary redemption.
Eternal redemption.
PART IV: AFTER THE CROSS — A NEW CREATION REALITY
1. A New Body Was Formed
“There is one body, and one Spirit…”
— Ephesians 4:4
This was never revealed before.
“Which in other ages was not made known…”
— Ephesians 3:5
2. Believers Are Placed INTO Christ
“For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body.”
— 1 Corinthians 12:13
Salvation is not merely forgiveness. It is union.
John Calvin wrote:
“As long as Christ remains outside of us, all that He has suffered and done is useless to us.”
But when we believe:
We are in Christ
Christ is in us
3. A Permanent Indwelling Spirit
“He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.”
— John 14:16
Not temporarily.
Not conditionally.
Forever.
PART V: THE DOCTRINE OF THE SEAL
1. Sealed by the Holy Spirit
“After that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.”
— Ephesians 1:13
A seal in the ancient world meant:
Ownership
Security
Authenticity
No seal was meant to be broken.
2. Sealed Until the Day of Redemption
“Whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.”
— Ephesians 4:30
Not until failure. Not until sin. Not until weakness.
3. God Finishes What He Starts
“He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it.”
— Philippians 1:6
A.W. Tozer said:
“God never saves a man and then abandons him.”
PART VI: ROMANS 8 — THE GREAT ASSURANCE CHAPTER
1. No Condemnation
“There is therefore now no condemnation…”
— Romans 8:1
Not less condemnation. Not postponed condemnation. No condemnation.
2. No Separation
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?”
— Romans 8:35
Paul lists:
Death
Life
Angels
Powers
Things present
Things to come
Then concludes:
“Nor any other creature shall be able to separate us…”
— Romans 8:39
Notice:
You are a creature
And you are included in “nor any other creature”
PART VII: WHAT ABOUT FAILURE AND SIN?
1. Salvation Is Not Based on Performance
“For by grace are ye saved through faith… not of works.”
— Ephesians 2:8–9
If works did not save you, works cannot unsave you.
2. Believers Can Lose Reward — Not Salvation
“If any man’s work shall be burned… he himself shall be saved.”
— 1 Corinthians 3:15
Loss is real. Judgment seat is real. But salvation remains.
3. Discipline Is Not Condemnation
“For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth.”
— Hebrews 12:6
God disciplines sons, not criminals.
PART VIII: COMMONLY MISUSED PASSAGES
1. Hebrews 6 — Context Matters
Hebrews addresses:
Jewish believers
Transitioning from Law to Grace
It warns against:
Going back to the sacrificial system
Rejecting Christ as final sacrifice
It does not teach loss of salvation.
2. “Endure to the End” (Matthew 24:13)
This is:
Tribulation context
Israel
Kingdom survival
Not church-age salvation doctrine.
PART IX: WHAT HAPPENS IF SALVATION CAN BE LOST?
If salvation can be lost:
Assurance disappears
Grace is diluted
Fear replaces faith
Christ’s work is made incomplete
R.C. Sproul said:
“If you could lose your salvation, you would.”
PART X: THE GOSPEL — SIMPLE AND FINAL
“Christ died for our sins… was buried… and rose again.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:3–4
Salvation is:
Not earned
Not maintained by effort
Not sustained by performance
It is:
Received by faith
Kept by God
Secured by Christ
CONCLUSION: THE FINAL QUESTION
Church, let me ask you again:
If salvation can be lost… who really saves you?
If it depends on man — it can fail.
If it depends on Christ — it stands forever.
“Neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”
— John 10:28
Rest. Rejoice. Believe.
ALTAR CALL / INVITATION
If you have never trusted Christ alone:
Believe the gospel
Receive eternal life
Not temporary life. Not conditional life. Eternal life.
“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life.”
— John 3:36
FINAL DECLARATION (TO READ ALOUD)
My salvation is not in my hands.
It is in Christ’s hands.
And His hands were pierced — not to let me go —
but to hold me forever.
AMEN.
