A Du'aa for Everything That Matters
Ya Allah, unite our hearts, set right the matters between us, guide us to the paths of peace, bring us from darkness into light, keep us away from all that is indecent — outward and inward — bless us in our hearing, our sight, our hearts, our spouses and our children, turn to us in mercy for You are the Ever-Relenting, the Most Merciful and make us grateful for Your blessings, praising You for them, accepting them and complete them upon us. (Sunan Abu Dawud)
Transliteration: Allahumma allif bayna quloobina, wa aslih dhata baynina, wahdina subulas-salam, wa najjina minadh-dhulumati ilan-nur, wa jannibnal-fawahisha ma dhahara minha wa ma batan, wa barik lana fi asmaʿina wa absarina wa quloobina wa azwajina wa dhurriyyatina, wa tub alayna innaka antat-tawwabur-raheem, wajʿalna shakirina liniʿmatika muthniyna biha qabiliha wa atimmha alayna.
There is something quietly remarkable about this du'aa.
It was taught by the Prophet ﷺ to his companions as words he wanted them to hold onto and return to. When you read it slowly, you understand why.
It asks for everything that holds a life together.
It begins with the heart; asking Allah to bring hearts closer to one another and to mend what has frayed between people. Because so much of our pain lives there, in the distances that form between us and the people we love, in the unsaid things, the unresolved tensions, the relationships that used to feel easy and no longer do.
Then it asks for guidance to paths of peace; not just one path but paths, plural. Because peace looks different for every person and every situation, and only Allah knows which road leads there for you.
Then it asks to be brought from darkness to light. Whatever form that darkness takes; confusion, grief, sin, distance from Allah... this is a request to be guided out of it. Not by our own effort alone but by His hand leading us through.
Then it asks for protection from what is visible and what is hidden because not every danger announces itself. Some of the things that harm us most are the ones we don't see coming.
Then it turns to the people we love. Our hearing. Our sight. Our hearts. Our spouses. Our children. It wraps them all in one du'aa, asking Allah to bless every part of us and everyone who belongs to us.
It ends with gratitude; asking not just for blessings but for the ability to receive them well, to recognise them, to praise Allah for them and to have them completed upon us.
This is a du'aa for a whole life. Say it for yourself and say it for the people you carry in your heart.
May Allah unite what has become distant, bring light to what has grown dark, protect what we love and complete His blessings upon us all. Ameen.
